Bridges strengthen local infrastructure and the transport links in which they are located by enabling commuters to travel to various destinations. This article features some of the tallest and highest bridges in the world. Note that the highest bridges are not necessarily the tallest bridges and vice-versa.  Here is a list of the highest bridges in the world.  Some of these bridges are a display of world-class engineering, construction, architectural design and expertise.

Great Belt East Bridge

These are most of the world’s highest and tallest bridges without any particular order. This article will guide you through some of the bridges mentioned in this list. This bridge is another addition to our list of the world’s highest bridges. It is located in Denmark and was built to link Halsskov and Sprogo. It stands at 833ft and the suspension bridge has enabled commuters to cross effectively and reduced reliance on local ferries.

This bridge is located in China and has a height of 496m (1627ft). The 1222m (4009ft) long suspension bridge has been the world’s highest bridge since 2009. It is located in the Hubei Province and crosses the valley of the Sidu River.

Baluarte Bridge

Baluarte Bridge is located in Mexico and at a height of 403m (1322ft). It is a cable-stayed bridge, located along the Durango-Mazatlan highway. The bridge has a total length of 1124m (3688ft), most of which passes above the valley underneath the bridge making it the highest cable-stayed bridge in the world. Baluarte Bridge is the second-highest bridge in the world.

The bridge is located in China and stands at a height of 370m (1210ft). It is a suspension bridge located in Guangzhou Province. It spans over the Baling River Valley and has a total length of 2237m (7339ft)

Beipanjiang River Bridge

This was the world’s highest bridge between 2003 and 2005. It is a suspension bridge in China, located in Guangzhou province. The bridge has a span width of 388m and is a feature on our list of the world’s highest bridges.

Aizhai Bridge

The bridge is located in China and has a height of 350m (1150ft) and is the world’s highest and longest tunnel-tunnel bridge.

This is a suspension bridge located in China, in Guangzhou province. It has a height of 318m (1043ft). It crosses the Beipan River and was opened to the public in 2009, just 6 years after another higher bridge crossing the same river was opened, the Beipanjiang River Bridge.

Liuganghe Bridge

This bridge has a height of 297m (974ft). It is located in China and has held the record for the world’s highest bridge between 2001 and 2003. It is the world’s highest beam bridge.

Zhijinghe River Bridge

This bridge is located in China and stands at a height of 294m making it the world’s highest arch bridge. The bridge crosses the valley of the Zhijinghe River and was opened for public use in 2009.

Royal Gorge Bridge

This bridge is located in the United States, in Colorado. It stands at a height of 291m (955ft). The Royal Gorge Bridge is a tourist attraction within a theme park. The bridge deck crosses the Royal Gorge 291m (995ft) above the Arkansas River. It held the record of the highest bridge in the world from 1929 until 2001. The bridge is 384m (1280ft) long and is the highest in the United States.

Beipanjiang River Railway Bridge

The bridge has a height of 275m (902ft) and is the world’s highest railway bridge. The bridge spans a deep canyon on the Beipan River in the Guangzhou province and is the third bridge in this list spanning over the Beipan River.

Our list of the world’s tallest bridges is not complete without mentioning the Duge Bridge, which is also part of the Hangzhou-Rulli Expressway. It stands at 565 metres (1854ft) above the Beipan River. The bridge connects Guizhou to Yunnan and was completed in 2016. The bridge has reduced the time it would take travellers to travel to Xuanwei from Suicheng to an hour from five hours.

Puli Bridge

This Bridge is located in the Chinese Province of Quijing. It stands at 485metres above the ground (1591ft) and connects Liupanshui and Xuanwei. It carries the Huangzhou-Ruili Expressway. It was opened in 2015.

Yachi River Bridge

This Chinese Bridge is located in Guizhou. It connects Bije and Guiyang and has carried the Guiyang-Qianxi Expressway since 2016. It has carried the Guiyang-Qianxi Expressway since 2016. It crosses over the Yachi River at 434m (1424ft). However, it is worth noting that the distance of the bridge from the exact water level beneath it, it is only 306m high. It is still one of the world’s highest bridges.

This Bridge is located in Guizhou, China. It was first opened in 2015 and has since then carried the Guiweng Expressway. The bridge stands at 406m (1332ft) high. It connects Weng’an and Guiyang areas, reducing the distance between them from 160Km to 38Km.

Yi Sun-sin Bridge

This bridge is located in South Korea and was completed in 2012. It is the fifth-longest suspension bridge in the world and is 890ft tall.

Stonecutters Bridge

This bridge is located in Hong Kong. It was awarded the 2010 Supreme Award for its construction and design incorporating over 1,000 tonnes of stainless steel. The bridge stands at 978ft. The bridge’s design was built to withstand the winds in Hong Kong which also proved a challenge during construction.

Yavuz Sultan Selim Bridge

This bridge is located in Turkey. It was designed by French structural engineer Michael Virlogeux and Swiss engineer Jean-Francois Klein, the Yavuz Sultan Selim Bridge is used for both road and rail. It was completed back in 2016 and comprises four lanes and a railway line. It is among the world’s tallest suspension bridges at 1056ft.
